Chris

Having just successfuly installed SlimServer 6 (March 14th nightly) on my LS-120, I recognised your problem regarding /etc/passwd.

I has major problems with the display of vi in my telnet sessions, including the overwriting of the first line of each file, which makes it impossible to see the root password entry! The problem is the terminal emulation type (auto-detect on Windows HyperTerminal *doesn't* work properly). Make sure your terminal type is set to vt100.

In Windows HT you have to change this in connection properties, then save the session and re-open it - it *doesn't* change the currently logged-in session. On OSX terminal, select Preferences from the Terminal menu, and select vt100 in the drop-down labelled 'Declare terminal type ($TERM) as:'

Once you've done this, vi should display correctly and you should be able to see your root password (it's always the first item in /etc/passwd).

Good luck with your install - I got mine working yesterday p.m., and it works like a dream - just make sure that you install a recent nightly build, *not* the 6.0b1 version (it doesn't have all the PPC perl modules needed to run v6)
