Of course you can plug in a monitor... the reason Dell says it isn't to be used as a workstation is just that they don't support it as a workstation. It is built for Windows Server 2003 and the driver discs included are for Win2k3. If you tried to put XP on it, you'd have to manually install each driver. You also can't use a PCI-express video card so you'd either need to use the onboard video or a PCI video card. If you can handle that, there is no reason why you can't use this as a workstation.
