If you set the Server Settings > Behavior > Sort By File Name preference to "Sort by song information", you may get better behavior with Browse Music Folder. Specifically, it will take longer for the folder to display in the web interface, but there's a better chance that you will avoid dropouts.

A quick explanation - with the preference set to "Sort by filename" we attempt to generate the music folder list immediately, without accessing the database. This results in a snappier web interface, but may take long enough for large directories to cause an audio dropout with FLAC or PCM audio. The "Sort by song information" setting forces us to access the database and we spread out the generation of the music folder list over a longer period of time - resulting in a slower response to the web interface request, but potentially better streaming behavior. This behavior is a function of our single threaded process - we're looking at ways in the future to separate handling of web interface requests and streaming into multiple threads or processes.

Out of curiousity, how many entries are there in your top-level directory? Are they all subdirectories or are there tracks as well?

I have 122 folders and one raw FLAC file in this particular case. Nearly
every folder has sub-folders It didn't seem to ever cause a problem with
5.4.1. I'll try to arrange things so that I can use browse by artist or
something--but that isn't my normal mode of operation.

I think 5.4.1 must have cached the folder list or something because I don't
recall it ever causing a drop out like this---which now does it every time
almost.

Phillip,

Could you confirm whether changing the "Sort By File Name" setting changes the dropout behavior?

Thanks,
