I'm not suggesting there's anything you can, or should, do about it -- just expressing my disappointment at my own situation and hoping someone would say "But wait, here's a workaround!"
A workaround? There is! :-)
I just uploaded a tar ball of my perl 5.8.6 install, compiled and running on a SME6 server, but it _might_ work with other RH7.3 based distributions, too. Feel free to read a little more if you want to give it a try (as always: at your own risk!). I can't provide you with a rpm (I don't know how to create it...), but installation should be quite straight forward:
- make a backup of your system (just so you can't blame me for messing it up - though we should not touch anything of the existing system)
- make sure the backup worked ;-)
- make sure you don't already have /usr/local/lib/perl5
- download http://www.herger.net/slim/perl5.8.tar.gz (~8.5MB) - login to your machine as root - copy the tarball to /usr/local/lib - run the following commands:
cd /usr/local/lib tar -xzf perl5.8.tar.gz /usr/local/lib/perl5/bin/perl5.8.6 -v
- this should give you something like This is perl, v5.8.6 built for i386-linux [..]
- if you're fine so far, you should link the binaries to /usr/local/bin for easier access:
cd /usr/local/bin ln -s /usr/local/lib/perl5/bin/* .
- now we'll test if slimserver is running:
service slimserver stop cd /usr/local/slimserver /usr/local/bin/perl5.8.6 slimserver.pl
- if you're still fine, we'll do the manual change you'll have to do after every update of slimserver: edit slimserver.pl and replace the first line saying
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
with
#!/usr/local/bin/perl5.8.6 -w
- then comes the big moment:
service slimserver start
If all that stuff does not work for you, simply remove the perl5 folder in /usr/local/lib and the links in /usr/local/bin.
Any feedback is appreciated. Please tell me if this was helpfull for you. I might set up a web page with these instructions. But don't expect anything before next week - I'll be leaving for another two days of skiing in an hour or so ;-)
