I may have solved my problem. I noticed I had the quality of the transcoding to HIGH. I set it to LOW and now CPU usage is in the teens.
Where is this set? I'm using Mac OS 10.3.8, so the place may be different, but I can look around.
... I haven't had a skip in the past 5 minutes. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll report back if I have any more problems, but I think that may have been it.
Listening today to a two-hour programme (no changes in my system, but may have had fewer programs open) I had a few dropouts but very few.
