The Rio's were cursed with a somewhat unreliable HDD unit from Hitachi, which has caused some failures. Rio are pretty good at replacing them even out of warranty though. The software lockups are just that - firmware crashes. My Karma has crashed (as I said) maybe 3 or 4 times in well over a year of use (and in all cases a quick reset fixed it). My girlfriends iPod mini has locked up at least 10 times since Christmas. Apple say there's nothing wrong with it and we should "expect all electronic devices to lock up some times". Hmmm.
