You're right - I was missing socketwrapper.exe. Funnily enough, it was one of the things I checked a few hours ago, and it was there at that time - I guess I've tried so much reinstalling over the past few hours that it got lost.
Anyhow - I've reinstalled Slimserver 6.01, and it's now back. Unfortunately, the symptoms remain the same - although I'm not getting any message in the debug window now. If it helps, when I try: "mplayer -really-quiet -vo null -cache 32 rtsp://rmlivev8.bbc.net.uk/farm/*/ev7/live24/radio4/live/r4_dsat_g2.ra"; I get BBC Radio 4 running through my PC speakers without problem.
