Musicmagic is supposed to remember the state of the API. However if it crashes for some reason, then it seems to get reset. I've had to check on it a few times myself. There may be other things that cause it to turn off, but I haven't isolated anything else. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a way to force it on as a command-line option.
