Hi, Luke... I had the Tiger beachball problem, in particular when switching between apps, though I am not running SS on Tiger.
I upgraded four machines from Panther to Tiger and only one of them had the problem (Dual 1.25GHz G4). From the Apple forums it would appear that several dual-processor users and some others have had this problem. The solution that I found worked for me was to run System Optimizer X 4.6.2. (http://www.mkd.cc/sox/) I just ran the complete optimize procedure with its defaults and all was well again. In fact Tiger appears snappier and generally faster all round.
