I can play the Hitchhikers surround stream by entering the URL into the server interface, but it is evidently simply transcoded into stereo. It plays at lower level than the stereo version from "Listen Again" (which, incidentally, decodes a little unstably in PLII Movie mode) via AlienBBC but it would appear that mplayer can't do anything more than 2-channel - hardly surprising, really.
