Having done a bit of poking around at another device in my possession, I think a compromise can make sense for both camps.
Search could be case insensitive (match as much as you can, right) Browse lists can use whatever comes first (subsequent variations as the list is compiled can match case insensitive to previous cases) Song info, current playlist and now playing would all display the tags AS IS. This appears to be just the way that my Rio Karma operates, as well as my old NexII. This makes the listings simpler, yet still shows raw info when the song is live, or queued.
