This device you're working on is very interesting. Thanks for actually looking into building/selling something along these lines. And even bigger thanks for looking for input before hand!
Ok, that being said, here's my input (for whatever it's worth): How about selling a configuration where the operating software & apps is running off a compact flash or some solid state card (via IDE for example) and then selling it diskless for the customer to plug-in their own drive(s)? That would allow customers to use drives they already own, or purchase drives that fit their exact needs or whatever drives the marketplace has available). Even though a configuration like this would leave you out of any margin you might add to the drive itself, you may be able to mark up the bare-box a bit higher to make it up the difference (or more!). doh! Did I just say that?!?!? :) lol Another big win would be that you wouldn't have to listen to your customer complain that they think you're overcharging for disk storage space that is too expensive because they can take advantage of some special offer you can't. And you can always sell the same box with disk(s) 'preinstalled'. Anywho, just a thought... Oh yeah, have you thought about raid options too? :) hehe I could go on and on, wait I already have! Doh! Thanks again, and good luck! -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of ultra238a Sent: Wednesday, May 25, 2005 3:29 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [slim] Re: NAS Drive Running Slimserver Solution Ok well we feel that due to the amount of SB2's that we are now selling each month and the developments coming from Slimdevices that the product is now filtering down into the general populus. People don't want their PC's or Mac's on all the time just so they can get access to their music collection. Anyway, this may all become old news soon :) How would you guys like the sound of a box with Gigabit Ethernet, much faster CPU, runs Slimserver out of the box and...... you can run your own software on it? Oh and a projected retail price of 199.99 with a 120Gb (maybe a 160Gb) price point ($320 for our American friends)! Tell me, am I feeling some love now or what?
