Disabling McAfee's On-Access Scanning makes a huge improvement, so that
is definitely the source of the problem. Unfortunately, in the
MediaSmart I have to have McAfee "Total Protection" asa Virus Scanner,
and bizarrely I cannot exclude the filename extension .my* (it won't
accept the *). Excluding only .my, .myi and .myd (the only extensions
I can find reference to) helps a little, but I assume there are other
extensions that doesn't cover. Is there a list somewhere of all the
MySQL extensions (if this isn't all of them)? Or could there be other
files which are also contributing to this problem?

Thanks so much for your help!!
