No The cable is the Network, the smallest possible network only 2 pionts but the same ethernet protocolls apply IP-adresses and such, but thats not the piont. The SB's MUST have connection to SqueezeCenter software or SqueezeNetwork otherwise they are useless. For local files you install SqueezeCenter, the client SB is not so smart it nows nothing, every command pressed on an ir-remote or controller goes to the server software (SqueezeCenter) who runs the show and streams the proper file's to the SB and issue other comands such as volume. The database index of your files is in SqueezeCenter so the SB would not find anything without it, it can only play streams sent to it, it does not have enough brain to find files and read tags on it's own.
