I could be wrong with this, but I think it has more to do with
licensing issues, rather than copy protection. Kind of like how the BBC
are allowed to broadcast track information on DAB and digital TV, but
they can't do it for their live or listen again web streams. Crazy
isn't it?

There is also the legal question: is transcoding to another format seen
as re-broadcasting? if it is, then that is probably not allowed.
