Sorry if you think this is overkill and I guess I am out of sync with
the majority but here are my reasons for having so many players:

1- I believe that the correct way to distribute music is using
synchronized local networked sources rather than a single source
feeding a mult-zone amp. This has the advantage of full local control
at each location, full meta-data at each location, and full flexibility
to play synchronized, or not, at any location without preset limits to
the number of "sources" or "zones". Despite the number, I do not use
Squeezeboxes in every nook and corner of the house (None in bedrooms
except mine, 6 basement rooms share a single player, 3 3rd floor rooms
share a single player, etc.)

2- The display. The display is what makes it useful to have players in
both the Library and the Dining Room even though they are right next to
each other. The display is what makes Squeezeboxes useful even when
music is not playing (weather, stocks, home automation alerts). The
display is what provides the "wow" factor with guests. The display is
what makes the players easy to configure (just try setting up a static
IP on an SBR and you will wish you had gotten an SB3 instead!) The
display is why I have 16 zones of Squeezebox Players rather than 16
zones of Sonos.
