thanks for the repies! well, "strings" is just a simple command to look
in a binary file and output any ASCII/text strings that it can find.
it's quick and dirty, but very useful. e.g.:

Code:
--------------------

  [silo:/silopool/music/Compilations/Rewind!]
  > strings "01. Open Door - Breathe.mp3" | more
  "WTPE2
  VariousTIT2
  BreatheTPE1
  Open DoorTALB
  Rewind!TYER
  2002TRCK
  01/12TLEN
  384293TCON
  PopTENC
  TSSE
  lame.exe -V0 --vbr-newCOMM
  CRC : AA73C8B6MCDI
  TXXX
  MusicMagic Data

AgEACNIfywaSdrJCgZcsHii2gAGDCIiW4F6Yp0XXnpfkuoABheTknrUP0kvPvrWqhIiAAeYGlR4SCK77gA

G3O+cl8Ku5QcpmgAKAAZj3lTCo5oGh/wM9UcHVgteFDdERk/NYicba2q+Y/5Fr2Ha2+sOc6cS14YM0jz7Y
  torh99T+iIAf5RD2pQA7qLTIk4mhgog=TXXX
  MusicMagic Fingerprint

ARnHSVMq6CJsJeEdWRdiFNcbBBAVExAiZwixEoYJDQz5BucJXAUFB8wQdQkDCVsFhgTIBKUD7gQcBIoDDQ

LkAn0CbwHHAdwBVAE3ATcBHgEY9W217PdfB0sAOgutA3QIrwrCA0sMxVrEB4YHrQTQCqQH3Ao+Au0GeRsk

  [[etc etc]]

--------------------

combine that with a nice command like "find" (and more importantly,
"grep" :) and you have a quick way to drill down through thousands of
files looking for a particular text string. Anyway, I'm not averse to
using a Windows tool (I have my music mounted via Samba to view)...Tag
& Rename is one of my all-time favorite applications! But I can
definitely tell you this weird tag is not anywhere in the files I have
for that artist.

So if it is some weird tag I have in another file, then there might be
some sort of MySQL (?) or SqueezeCenter bug in linking that data to
where it shouldn't be. And it's also odd that it shows up on the 'net
for other music. I'll do a thorough scan of all my music and report
here. If I can't find it, maybe I can do a manual MySQL edit to drop
that genre tag.
