I've been in the same boat and wished for a "Stop Scan" button as well.
Killing a busy service in Windows can definitely leave the service in an undesirable state - neither running nor stopped. It can be a pain to recover from, and often requires rebooting the machine. Using Browse Music Folder is probably the smartest way to go when adding just one or two albums, although it's not as handy as doing a rescan.
