I use DISCNUMBER as the tag for multiple CD albums, with values like '1/2' and '2/2'. For single CD albums I don't add the tag at all, and it all works fine with grouping multi-disc albums (remembering to set the 'Group Discs' setting in SC to 'Treat multi-disc sets as a single album', of course).
