I worked in a motorcycle shop for some years (Triumph and Vincent).
The nice thing about the old bikes was that each one had a very
distinctive "sound. And it wasn't just architecture - Ducs sound
different from Guzzis (both 90 degree twins), Gold stars different from
Velocettes, different from 441s (all singles, approx same displacement),
Vincents different from Harleys (different angle, but otherwise both
V-twins).
And, of course, the different architectures were really different,
aurally (no confusing square fours and BMWs - ever).
After college, I lived at home for a couple of years. I had a 450cc
Ducati Desmo single (bevel head dirt racer I'd turned into an
almost-legal cafe racer). My dog could tell I was coming home from far
enough away (and not some other bike) for her to "announce" my
impending arrival long before my family could hear it.
