In case it helps anyone else trying to integrate iTunes on one computer with SC on another computer, I appear to have solved the issue for my setup with the simple expedient of setting up an aliased folder on the SC machine so that when SC follows the path in the iTunes .xml it gets to the right file.
In other words, my iTunes .xml file lists music as "://localhost/Volumes/Media/Music/iTunes Music/xxx" where Volumes/Media is how my mac refers to the ReadyNAS volume music folder. But to SC on the ReadyNAS, my music folder looks like "://Media/Music/iTunes Music/xxxx." So on the ReadyNAS i created some empty folders called "localhost" and "Volumes" and "Media" put an alias in there pointing to the actual music directory.
