I haven't tried DD-WRT, but Tomato is straightforward and pretty well-documented. I like it a lot better than the firmware that came with my Buffalo router. The Buffalo WHR-HP-54G is great, but unfortunately, you can't buy them in the US right now because of some lawsuit. According to the web site, they will be able to start selling them again "soon."
