It's an attempt by the DB to detect artists with non-exact matches to be considered the same artist.
In your case, I think it's due to the setting that allows configurable article names to be ignored for sorting. Accented characters has a similar issue. José Gonzalez and Jose Gonzalez are seen to be the same artist, but the name displayed in the app is dependent on the order that the scanner scanned the files.
