It's a little simpler now, rleong and John Gorst on the xPL forum updated the xPL support in slimserver in May this year so that it can now explicity flag changes in the power-state of each squeezebox on your system, irrespective of where the change is triggered (e.g. trapping a button press won't capture an alarm clock event). But otherwise the approach I use is similar - I use determinators that send X10 commands whenever an appropriate power state change is detected.
