My music collection is on an internal drive, so I'm not totally sure why
it wouldn't work.

Is the drive just a standard external drive, or is it a type of NAS
device? This is from the TVersity Getting Started guide:

I don't see why it wouldn't work with a standard USB external drive
though. Only thing I can think of is to check if Windows is assigning
the USB drive the same drive letter as an existing mapped network share
(it does happen sometimes), if you have any mapped network shares that
is.
