Been in Cyprus a few days and made a start at sorting the house out. My
wife inherited it from her aunt, and the old lady threw nothing out
since the house was built in 1952.

Been "mucking out" the kitchen cupboards. They were lined with
newspapers from 1962.

But in one of the outhouses . . . two remarkable finds. A Philips
BX230U table top wireless (radio), and a PYE BLACK BOX!!!!

I have know for years there was an acoustic gramophone in the house,
but the Black Box is a very nice find. I changed the plug - it had a 2
pin 5A plug with only one pin! I put one of the 78s from the gramophone
on the Monarch Autochanger, and off it went.

The Philips radio does work but may need some attention - it's an
average wireless of the day. The Black Box was rather up market - what
do they sell for today?

I am staring at a very silent Boom I brought with me from UK. My laptop
works if one chair is precisely positioned near the open lounge window -
then I can borrow (with permission) WiFi from a neighbour. There is not
enough signal for anything serious, that will have to wait for
http://www.cyta.com.cy/index-en.htm and http://www.prime-tel.com/ to
get themselves sorted out!

In the meantime I keep thinking about what I can do with that black box
- one small lounge in the house (the Cypriot style entrance) we will
leave entirely 50s retro . . . now could I hitch up a hidden SB3 for a
"Wireless" in that room?" Lots more pressing issues before fun like
that!

(Look well down this page
