You are right that 'mac' is the executable, but it isn't readily
available in Linux distros due to licence reasons. Better use mplayer
anyway, here is what I have in my custom-convert.conf to transcode ape
to wav:

Don't know if this still works and how I would have to modify it to
offer transcoding to flac or mp3 since I have transcoded all I had in
ape to flac a whle ago. Since ape is lossless you won't suffer quality
loss if you do the same.
