Okay, feeling slightly stupid -- when I set it to US again and went to the "Last.fm" tab I now noticed there is a link that says "Authorize this account" -- a click and a button press later the account was authorized and now I can play Last.fm on my squeezeboxen.
Thanks so much for helping out, guys.
