The first thing I would do is install squeezecenter. It's free so you can try it out before you buy any squeezebox stuff.
Just to give you my story: A friend let me try out his squeezebox 1, and I ended up ordering a squeezebox 2 because squeezecenter was great, and it worked well to stream audio so that my girlfriend could use it no problem.
