I get this error too sometimes. For me it happens when I connect to the network via serial cable->PC.
It has to do with the way SlimControl is checking if the server requires a password: If SqueezeCenter does require auth. and no password is given, than it closes the connection right away. SlimControl interprets an instant server-side connection-close as "requiring password". So maybe the server you are connecting to is accepting the conn. on port 9090, but not running SqueezeCenter.
