What website says its a "Squeezebox Slimserver"? We need to know which squeezebox you have connected to your Dennon? Look at the top of this 'PAGE' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/HardwareComparison) at the pictures and tell us which unit you have. The price point sounds like a Classic though. Next, what version of Squeeze Center are you running and on what Computer/Operating System? What file type are you trying to play (MP3, FLAC, WAV, WMA)? Also are you running a firewall or active virus protection? Also how is the played connected to the Computer upstairs: wired by Ethernet or using wireless WiFi?
