I'm assuming your SB is an SB original, SB2, or SB3/Classic. First, cycle through presses on the Brightness button of the remote to make sure that it hasn't somehow been reset to 0. If that doesn't work, what version of SqueezeCenter/Squeezebox Server are you running? If the problem appeared after upgrading to 7.4.0, the problem you describe appears to be affecting some users. I'm not sure if the problem has been fixed in the 7.4.1 betas, but you might give that a try.
