Maybe you just haven't tested it long enough. I've been using 7.4 for a long time and Random Mix works fine for me and plays only the selected genres.
One thing you have to know is that the unchecked genres are not excluded by the Random Mix. The checked genres are included, but there's no exclusion implied. This comes into play when you have tracks that are tagged with and belong to more than one genre. Is any of your Christmas stuff tagged with more than one genre? If you have a track tagged, say, Christmas;Rock, and you play only 'Rock' in Random Mix, then it _will_ play this track. It's always been like this.
