Glad things are working.

Compression in such protocols often leads to stuttering, until enough
data is able to burst.  Also, since your music data is compressed
already, there's probably no gain in compressing more, and can be
harmful.

But it can work the other way too, in that if you have a problematic
line, compression can assist, at the expense of some early latency,
that data transfers are more reliably.

My guess what that you had it enabled, but that's not the putty default
as I recall.
