I didn't track down the problem unfortunately - I tried an old
playlist, but that didn't work and it was only by moving to 6.1.2 that
it resolved itself. My guess is that I messed up the slimserver
installation when I tried to do a fresh install of iTunes - I think I
deleted the iTunes plugin when cleaning everything out on my Mac. 

My only recommendation is to do a fresh install of slimserver and
iTunes.
