The plan in Nokia is all based around Qt. Symbian continues (and is now open source) and the future Symbian^3 and Symbian^4 phones will be Qt based, the latter I think far more.
The idea is that the general smartphones will be Symbian, the top end range will be more likely Maemo (or now MeeGo). Both platforms run Qt apps. >From a developer perspective, you don't have to develop specifically for each individual OS which has always been the pain with Nokia (e.g. having to do a version for S60 3.1, then 3.2, and 5.0). Just develop for Qt, and the binaries are compatible across the OS range once the Qt core is there. Might have to rebuild for Maemo though, and you may have to add some customisations for the different experiences (screen sizes, layouts and touch/non-touch). P.S. You can do Qt now on S60 3.1, 3.2 and 5.0 phones. Check out the Qt for Symbian demos and it just installs the core framework and a bunch of apps. They work very well on my E72. The plan also is to eventually support Qt apps in the Ovi Store, but they need to be easy to install with all dependencies, and it's not there yet. Oh, and then outside of Qt, there's the WRT framework and I think there's an Ovi framework. Not to mention you have the option of Java, which is universal even with S40 phones. Anyway, I'm planning to play about with Qt. If I manage to pick it up and no one else has bothered I might look into a SqueezeCentre remote control app of some kind as it's something I'd like, but I know nothing about Qt at present so it's going to be a long way off. If someone's up for starting an open source dev I'd be interested in helping out once I'm up and running. My dev skills are more on the underlying C++ side than GUI look and feel though (I'm a software developer, not an artist :D), though the C++ is a little rusty as I've been doing C# for a few years now. Now if we had Qt.Net on Symbian... :D -- deadkenny ------------------------------------------------------------------------ deadkenny's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6722 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=59033 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
