That's correct that it is not supported, and moreover, there are no plans to make it release-ready. It is maintained as a developers' tool, and available as a perpetual-beta product to end users. I've never tried using it as an over-the-internet player, but it works fine for me on Windows or Ubuntu as a controller for hardware SBs on the local network. It works fine for me as a software player on Windows, and once I get my Ubuntu soundcard issues sorted out I expect it can be a software player there, too. YMMV and all that.
