I think you misunderstood the pricing. The "+$18" is the incremental cost of the Family Pack ($54) over and above the single license ($36). So with tax it's $63.45 ($54+17.5%) plus the annual metadata fee after the first year. Probably still too steep, but thought it would be good at least to have the right numbers.
I'd be wary of chaining myself to a proprietary codec like WMA (lossless or lossy), and I also hate the way WMP litters my hard drive with little files.
