I believe they are only repairing SB3's under warranty.  So if it was
purchased less than two years ago it qualifies for warranty repair.

Couple of ideas (long shots):
-  you tried the Brightness button?
-  try a Xilinx Reset?  
Unplug power, press and hold down the one (1)  button on the remote,
plug power back in (whilst continuing to hold down the one button)
1 = Xilinx
-  any chance it is under three years old, purchased new with a credit
card, still have receipt?
