For a light weight DLNA server, you can also check out http://sourceforge.net/projects/minidlna/. It is a nice and simple C/C++ app. It will not do transcoding for you, but does what it does do very efficiently.
I have to say I think DLNA is a poor way to distribute content when your used to something likse squeezeboxserver.
