Having had this problem for nearly 4 years I have finally found a simple solution. I thought I would put it here in case anybody else comes across this thread.
The problem, as some people suggested, was down to how itunes organises folders. The solution is NOT, as many people suggested when I googled it, to tick the "this album is compilation" on the information tab of each track. You need to select all tracks that are part of a compilation and click "cmd I" to get information, the change the Album Artists to "Various Artists".
