Are you using replay gain tags ? mp3 or flac files ? iTunes sound check
?

RG tags makes things ~10dB softer , this feature called Volume
Adjustment/Replay Gain .
Can be turned of in the settings.

You can also make the volume 100% fixed in the settings

380mV input sensistivity , you sure you don't use the phono input (if
you have the optional phono input) 

Ther is nothing inherently wrong with using the volume control and as
their is no standard anymore things can have different levels, but
usually the squeezebox is on the louder side of things ?
