A USB cable? Are you kidding? Have you completely misunderstood the point of AirPlay?! ;-) By that argument, there is no need for AirPlay at all - just use a dock. Note also that one can AirPlay things from my ipod other than just music synced from iTunes. Several apps support streaming sound over AirPlay (such as Spotify, TuneIn Radio, etc - at least, so I'm told.
