I don't believe that services like last.fm should be free and to be honest I'm surprised we were allowed to continue this long with an ad-free service via the Squeezebox. I do think, however, that other business models need to be explored.
I'm more disappointed that yet another service has become unavailable. Outside the US we have few options as it is. Also, the wonders of currency conversion translate $3 to be £3 (almost $5 at today's rates).
