12 years or so ago I had a girlfriend in Washington DC. One time I was
calling home to work to check up on things, but my calling card
wouldn't go through the automatic procedure. After 3 tries (to
eliminate typing mistakes) I called the operator. She told me I was
trying to make an overseas call with a calling card, and they didn't
allow that. I said I'm trying to call Canada. She said "you see". I
said Canada isn't overseas. (in fact, in the phone system, it really
isn't even a different country code. Canada and the US share one
country code - "1". So if you call from europe you dial international
prefix followed by 1 (for the country)). She said it was. At which
point I lost my temper and said "I just drove here from Canada
yesterday, and I didn't cross any seas!" and hung up and gave my money
to another long distance carrier.

My girlfriend overheard this and nearly fell down the stairs she was
laughing so hard.
