Sorry, I should have given that info already. It's 6.1.1, on XP. I don't have many accented characters. I allow iTunes to look after the filenames, so they should be pretty straightforward.
One thing I was wondering.. i do have quite a lot of files with similar names. For example, I keep a lot of recordings of gigs. When there's some talking between songs, I tend to give it a track number and no track name - meaning there's a lot of files named something like 01.mp3, 02.mp3.
