You all may be interested that Pixi Pluses for Verizon are being sold unlocked for $55 on Amazon. I am getting one to use as a cell phone, but for that price it sounds like it would make a great inexpensive SB remote.
The Pixi Plus is a WebOS phone with a keyboard in a blackberry-style format. The Plus version includes wifi so no cell contract is necessary.
