No other gadget has stood the test of time as well as my Slim Devices players have. I have 1 SB1, 3 SB1g's, an SB2, and a Duet that I use daily. They all do what I need them to do brilliantly, and they've only gotten more capable over the years.
I'll echo what others have said about the VFD-based models being the best. They're easy to use and super-responsive. Just a joy to use.
