I had a Linksys combined modem/wireless router and found that it overheated with heavy wireless activity (i.e. streaming to multiple Squeezeboxes) causing problems both with the internet connection as well as local networking. So I replaced it with a simple ethernet modem (free from my ISP and tucked away out of sight) and a Buffalo AirStation WHR-HP-G54. If you don't know this device it's a high-power b/g (not n) router. Not made any more unfortunately.
It's so good I bought a few more used ones from eBay and configured them as bridges to give me 100% wireless signal pretty much everywhere -chez nous-, plus a spare. The AirStations are rock-solid and you can flash Tomato or DD-WRT firmware as well if you're that way inclined. I have a mixture of stock firmware as well as these other two but don't notice any performance difference in my setup. Just my recommendation.
