Thanks for your reply! My server setting is "Play other songs in album".
Your long press solution works fine and only adds a single track (for both "play next" and "add to end"). My playlist modification mode in Squeezepad is however set to "Always Ask", and I would have thought that it would give the same result as above when pressing "play next" and "add to end" on a single track.
